The Joy Of Solitude

The older I get the more I love being alone. I could spend weeks alone if I weren't forced to interact with all kinds of people. Solitude has a depth both real and rather layered as I am discovering. I love being alone - in my own mind - in my own thoughts - surrounded by everything I've chosen to experience. I sit with my Ipod (God how much do I love the simple things like my Ipod) and dissipate countless thousands of hours in reverie. I can sit in front of the fish tank for hours (my beta fish loves me and lets me pet him). I love being alone in my apartment with my piles of books. Dukedom large enough, indeed.

What Is Cool?

What does it really mean to be "cool"? HERE IS THE DEFINITION.

My Love For Duff, Geof, & Charm City Cakes

I love Ace of Cakes. Love the show, love the cast, love it all. Geoff is a dreamy nerd! Yum.

Goodnight, Bittersweet Comedy God

This blog remains officially in mourning. Carlin was the Rosetta Stone of comedy, and the most influential comedian in my adolescent life. Why are all the cool people dying? This totally f-ing sucks. I love you George. You sit atop my pantheon - as bittersweet comedy god.

Bill Orally Daily Digest

Who has time to hate Bill Orally for a whole hour each day? VH1 condensed one show into one minute.

I Can Finally Sleep In On Sundays

Tim went to heaven yesterday. I loved watching Tim. He was the only reason I got out of bed every Sunday for the past 16 years. My heart is breaking for Luke and Maureen and Big Russ. He died in the newsroom with his shoes on. God I'm going to miss Tim. This sooo f-ing sucks.

At The Deathhouse Door

Wow. Run don't walk to see At The Deathhouse Door. Meet pastor Pickett, the prison chaplain who delivered the last rights at more than a hundred executions. Hang on to your seats, he actually made audio tapes of many of them. DO NOT MISS THIS FILM. Mindbendingly morbid. If you're as obsessed with mortality as I am, this will blow your mind.

So In Love With The Superego-less Kathy Griffin

Here's Kathy with my friend Erik. I just saw Kathy on Larry King, and she was brilliant. I love Kathy - her brutal honesty, and complete lack of superego. I think she's one of the funniest people in America. Kathy Griffin you're a personal hero of mine. God you make me laugh hysterically. Kathy's act is comedic perfection. One thing I've learned after all these years with the Grabbys: almost all pornstars are vastly better looking in person than in photos.

Andy Bell & Erasure On My Mind

Bruce didn't make it to the Grabbys this year, but I was lucky enough to be joined by Andy Bell, lead singer of Erasure. I cannot calculate the effect of Erasure on my adolescence. Some of these songs have become part of the fabric of my gay psyche: Always, Oh L'amour, A Little Respect, Sometimes, Chains of Love, Love To Hate You, Take A Chance On Me, Lay All Your Love On Me, etc. Thanks Andy for a great weekend, can't wait to see you in Hastings. You're a diamond. xoxox (and, yes, that's Jayne Friedman's red hair on the right, she and Andy go way back)

Cansandra's Dream Dr. Freud's Filmic Field Day

I love when Woody Allen makes movies without Woody Allen on the screen. This is delicious bildungsroman. Don't miss it.

The Trouble With O

“It is not materialism that is the chief curse of the world, but idealism. Men get into trouble by taking all their gaudy visions and hallucinations seriously. The lowly yokel, pausing in the furrow to mop his brow, dreams a dream of high achievement in the adjacent city. Ten years later there is a plow standing idle—and another victim of Wall Street is laboring as a bus-driver. The normal poor man is simply a semi-idiot whose dreams have run away with his capacities. Designed by nature to be a dish-washer in a lunch-room, he has endeavored to make himself a structural ironworker at $5 an hour—and so he has lost his leg, his means of existence, and his sacred honor. It is idealism that causes marriage. It is idealism that makes poets. Every poorhouse is full of idealists.” - Henry Louis Mencken
