The Next President Of The United States

A girl can dream, right? Can anyone deny he's the only Democrat who can actually give a speech? I'm so proud this man is My Senator, and he's got my vote for POTUS. I LOVE YOU BARACK!

Oh it goes without saying that I adore him, and I've told him I would very much like to see him running for president.

Well, the new and improved Al Gore is pretty fabulous, and Russ Feingold is awesome.

For Anthony/Tony -- anyone can correct me if I get something factually wrong. Barack Obama is the junior senator from Illinois, and, I believe, the only black senator in DC. He's a genuine "African-American," having been born in Kenya. He is brilliant, charming, easy going, progressive and, be still my beating heart, vocal about his Christian faith. The only reason I don't think he should run for President *just yet* is that Congress needs more people like him.

TODD, love the fact that you talk to him... and ALSO, he has a UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO past... so that makes him even more exciting to me... OH, and, of course, without saying, uh... BLACK!... HELLO! YUMMMMMMMMMMMM SEXXXY! OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!! (even my REPUBLICAN parents like this guy!!!.. because of his Jesus stuff!) WHOOHOO!

Well, to be honest (which in this case comes easily), I wouldn't mind at all seeing this face on our TV news instead of that other I can hardly look at anymore.
It was somehow refreshing reading through your blog, Spencer, and all the indepth comments I came across. Thank you for this new kind (at least, for me) of brainstorming!

Just to throw something interesting in the mix. I have it on good authority from someone high up in the Dem party that Hillary is going to run in the next presidential election. Alors, does this mean we will have to make do with Barak as Vice? It will be interesting to see how this develops, especially with the fall elections rolling up on us.

Ah yes, someone "high up" in the Democratic party, the same assholes who brought us John Kerry, who pulled off the singularly amazing feat of losing (Robert Kennedy Jr. allegations aside...) to the most hated President in American history, all because he was too petrified of the mythological beast Swingerus Voterus to actually take a firm position on anything until it was already too late.

I'm sure Hillary will run, but I don't think she's got a shot unless the DNC, like last time, works overtime pushing out the interesting candidates by trying to make them appear as fringe lunatics, so that we got stuck with John "I Voted For the War Before I Voted Against It" Kerry and his fucking "electability." (Bitter, party of 49 million, your table's ready.)

Hillary suffers from the same disease, willing only to say that the Iraq war has been poorly managed. The American people want a President who can get up there and say Iraq was savage, bloody boondoggle foisted on the American people, where we used innocent Iraqis as lab rats in an experiment to see if we could grow a democracy overnight at gunpoint.

ARRRRRGH. Thanks, I needed a good rant.

Hillary cannot win. Period.

It will be difficult for an opposition party to win an election unless they actually OPPOSE some of the policies of the current party in government.

The major opposition party in Australia will not come out and OPPOSE the Iraq War, nor is it happening in the UK, and neither will it happen in the US.

The Iraq War was a done deal. (my cynical opinion)

The only opposition for the war came from minor parties who would never gain office.

Beside all of Andy's valid points this country is still not ready for a women president. When push comes to shove our government is still run by and seen as a good ole boy society.

i was much more enthusiastic about b.o. before his recent (last week?) comments about how the dems need to court the evangelicals.

what the dems need to do is denounce the fascist, backward, hate-filled agenda of the religious right once and for all.

defending glbt rights, abortion rights, immigrant rights and workers rights--heck, plain old civil rights--is always going to bring accusations of godlessness from republicans because that's the game strategists like karl rove have taught them to play. they aren't going to stop painting the dems as godless, souless, unpatriotic, un-American demons, because they know that's how they win elections. no amount of pandering to the right can alter that. no amount of compromise or conformity can win them over. it's this obsession with winning over the religious right that causes the dems to throw glbt americans (among others) under the bus.

b.o. has every right to be religious. and if what he meant was that the dems need to reinvent themselves as a party that's found religion, they can certainly do that. however, no amount of religion is going to change the subordinate position that the dems have in the minds of evangelicals, *as long as the dems also continue to support the things that evangelicals hate.* even showing half-hearted support of progressive causes (like same-sex marriage) is enough to get the dems painted with the godless brush. if b.o. was suggesting that the dems temper their already tepid support of liberal and progressive causes in order to woo evangelical voters, then i for one won't be doing any celebratory dances were he to win the white house.

the sad truth is that in the current political climate, you can't court the evangelicals while supporting the rights of despised and villified minorities. them's the rules of the culture wars. i didn't make them up; the republicans did.

if pols like b.o. (and howard dean) put even half as much time and energy into courting the other 30-60% of americans who are so fucking disenfranchised that they don't vote *period* as they do courting the religious right who despises them, we might actually see some genuine growth and progress in this country.
