Top Chef

Most of the riff raff is finally gone, and it's down to handsome and uber- smooth Harold Dieterle (whom I think should win); Tiffani Faison - bisexual tres-talented red-head; Lee Anne Wong - fierce Asian beauty; Dave Martin - hyperemotional flavor queen; and the evil Stephen Asprinio - fake sommelier. Dave is divine, of course, and I'd love to eat anything he cooks. Tiffani seems quite competent and is a real pistol. Lee Anne is a total pro. Harold Dieterle is ultra laid back and has such sharp knife skills (Harold is also strangely sexy, but I think he's straight). Stephen, of course, is unspeakably vile, and should expatriate with Jo De La Rosa - barf. Dave, hang in there. Harold, my money (and tongue) are on you. Tiffani, you rock hard. Lee Anne, you'll succeed anywhere on the planet. And isn't Billy Joel's wife pretty? My mouth is already watering for season two - yum. MY HAROLD DIETERLE FAN PAGE!!!

My money is on Lee Anne. Stephen is so damn condescending -- he can't have very many friends.

she could VERY easily win mark.... remember thegas station quickfire challenge? she's GOOD...

Lee Anne is very good! I'm rooting for her actually. And not just because i think she's so damn sexy! yum. gotta love an asian beauty who can cook like that!!

okay, if randy AND mark are backing lee anne, maybe i'm missing something.... i'm for Harold first, then lee anne, then dave, then tiffani. i'll have to take a closer look at lee anne. it will probably come down to lee anne and harold.

OH but wait, you know what, it was HAROLD who made that DUMBFUCK retarded decision to serve RARE TUNA from a STREET CART. UGH. That had to be one of the worst decisions in the entire series. Has lee anne made any huge mistakes yet?

I find, in my old age, that I can't stand things ... that i can't stand.

I so couldn't stand Stephen that I stopped watching the show.

But I'm reading blogs about it so I can at least root for Harold without getting all frustrated. Wimp that I am, I know.

In one of the recent challenges, there were two teams of three to create a restaurant concept.

Lee Ann had to work with Stephen and Miquel and the fact she didn't end up slitting her wrists made me respect her professionalism. Granted they lost, but she was able to keep her sanity while working under terrible circumstances with those two nuts!

In the other team, it was blatant Harold took a back seat and he didn't seem to want to step up or stand out. In fact, when he was asked who should go to Cannes, his response was, "not me." My response to him would have been, "then why are you here?" To me Harold is just a tag along.

Honestly, I just want to see Stephen loose.

ah, yes, interesting - see, i thought declining the cannes invite was a very smooth tactical move... he not only didn't choose himself over the other two, but he didn't choose between them. he is very careful about staying out of the fray, and i'm thinking when it comes down to the last few, and when things get hot, perhaps his self-sacrificing stances will benefit him... or maybe not. But lee anne certainly hasn't made any mistakes as huge as harold's tuna-cart blunder. So maybe lee anne will get it. I just know that i'm going to feel the sting of the rest of the eliminations (except stephen's). It's going to hurt if dave goes, and i'm a little afraid for him. I'm predicting stephen will go next. I hope he doesn't outlast any of the remaining ones - because anyone else going before stephen would be a crime.

i'm thinking tiffani should go after stephen - remember that attitude she had about cooking for kids? yes, i understand being highbrow and elitist, but when you're trying to win a reality show you should be able to cook for dogs. i sense some attitude issues with tiffani. I hope it comes down to harold, dave, and lee anne. Can't they all three win? ugh. I think stephen is next, then tiffani, then dave, then it's anybodies guess whether harold or lee anne will win. but remember how awesome lee anne did in the first episode in that kitchen challenge for the fancy chef? we knew then she was a pro. I REALLY LIKE THIS SHOW!

AH, okay, stephen DOES get credit for providing the funniest reaction shots - that look of UTTER HORROR and ASTONISHMENT the grips his face when he LOSES anything... it makes me smile because he's so awful, and he's SO ARROGANT and SO full of himself that he doesn't even REALIZE how heinous he is... so that look of SHOCK is just funny... i want to say "yes stephen, you are THAT big a loser... you are THAT horrible... don't look so surprised."

I'm a little surprised the judges haven't lost their patience with Dave's excessive emotions. I know I lost mine several episodes ago. And Tiffani is simply a trouble maker who loves to stir the shit. For those reasons I think they might get the boot before Stephen.

BTW, did you watch any of Fox's Hell's Kitchen with Gordon Ramsay? It's supposed to come back for a second season on June 12th.

Ah, Spence. Yet another show I do not follow. But I still love you, pop culture and all. Lick.

I simply cannot abide a fake sommelier. There are things one does not mess with.

I actually thought Harold a wuss for declining to step up on the Cannes invite. One thing i know about great chefs is there ever present ego. I would have liked harold to respond with the " I AM that good" attitude, rather than being so self-effacing. As for Stephen, good riddance. It will be Lee Anne and Harold in the final.

I dont think anyone is giving the respect Tiffani deserves. Although her personality is unappealing to me and i feel that she is over-competitive, her meat dish in the Ted Allen challenge and her signature pumpkin dish in the first challenge were huge standouts. Aside from the sandwich challenge for chef Tom this week she has been up there in all the quickfires also...i believe. I am definately rooting for harold, his humble attitude is a breath of fresh air on the show and his skills are outrageous. I think it will come down to harold and tiffani.

Blogger Aethlos said...

yes, i agree about harold's humility...that's why i'm rooting for him... passing on cannes goes against every instinct of survival-tv. i think it was a ploy, of course, but it worked on me. I would have just added "you go to cannes, i just want to cook... cook cook... i'm a chef, not a movie star"... that would have been smooth

Dave will go quickly with his freakouts. He shot himself in the foot with his so-unprofessional "I'm not your bitch, bitch!". Tiffani baited him, of course, but he made the choice to respond to it. I like Dave, and I'd eat at his restaurant any time, but he ain't gonna win this show.
The St-evil-ene will be gone soon; they've had enough of him bullshit as well...espresso presentation cups and all. Lee Ann definitely rocks, and I like Tiffani as well, despite some not-so-tasty displays of arrogance. (Then again, they have all displayed a modicum of self-righteousness in turn.) I liked Harold a lot at first, a bit less as time has gone on. Also, don't forget he (and Lisa) forgot the jicama w/ the Mission cart challenge. D'oh!
And other than being Billy Joel's wife, how did this stoned Stepford bimbo get the job?? The girl can barely put a sentence together, even off a cue-card. Yeesh.

YES, i really like food network, all of them but rachel ray, she irritates me with her TWO adjectives... ugh.. she's annoying, but i'm GLAD that DAN won the next food network star! I know, reggie is "famliy", but reggie is annoying, and that dan did some COOL dishes!

Maybe that's why i watch it... i can't eat it.

There is a rumor circulating that there will be a DOUBLE ELIMINATION this week.

My vote: auf wiedersehen (oops, wrong show) to Stephen and Tiffani.

The final two: Harold and Lee Ann.

My money is on Harold. He seems cool in the kitchen and can work under fire. Stephen is the evil character everything about him is fake. Lee Anne is definantly a possibility for taking it all. I think the next out will Tiffani,

btw(Stephen is out. THANK GOD)

Don't let his arrogance on the surface fool you. Stephen will be a success in his field because he's driven by a need to prove himself (live up to his own bravado).
He's probably like most of us on the inside: big dreams/some insecurities/guts mixed with fear.
Let's not forget this is all edited to attempt to create an interesting show, too. His apology on the reunion was very fine and it went a long way in my estimation of him as a man.

there is a HUGE element of YOUTH involved in stephen's arrogance... 10 years of pain and suffering and failure will fix a lot of what bothers me about him. :)

Lee Ann Wong! I liked the episode where she said Stephen was a professional.....a professional bullshitter, since you have to be one to be a Sommalier. Hahah. Sorry Alpina Singh! I still love you. You still go to Avec and Blackbird? I'll buy you a drink if I offended.

Hey, sommeliers aren't bullshitters. They have a job that blends a need for a vast descriptive vocabulary with a trained palate for a beverage that has been around since Man invented containers and put grape juice in them.
Talking about wine is difficult and often ridiculed by people who don't really care about the finer points of the art of wine-making and its quality assessment. That's why there are sommeliers.

Anyone that's going to start berating another person's profession ought to have some working knowledge of that profession before they cast judgment. Lee Ann was disrespectful to an entire profession when she called Stephen a professional bullshitter. I sure hope the next restaurant she works in doesn't have a sommelier that's seen the show.

Also, I thought Stephen's tray of purreed fruits in the espresso cups was novel and inventive, considering it was done in a few minutes and was meant to be an unusual presentation. That was the test.

I also wanted to express my surprise about the wedding event. How can five trained chefs not produce one team member confident enough to make cake from scratch???

I am a self-trained home cook and baker, but even I know that you NEVER crack eggs into the batter!

You use a glass bowl and crack them one-by-one, each time inspecting the bowl for shell bits and the egg for blood spots. I always take out the protein threads, too, because they can get caught up on the blender blades or bake up white in a colored cake.

Otherwise, they did a good job overall (can't tell about that cold salmon, though).

It was the ONLY episode I think I could have done a better job than the chefs! (on the cake)
