Witty Bitch

Here's to Margot Asquith, who on one occasion, when her name was mispronounced by the American actress Jean Harlow, announced to the assembled company that "The "t" is silent, as in "Harlow". That's got to be the best line of a decade if not century. Also, has anyone Googled "failure" lately?

OK >>> I'll trot out this old war horse of acid camp >>> Clare Booth Luce and Dorothy Parker were both walking through a door [at the Algonquin?]. Clare makes an ironic display of largesse and deference saying, "Age before beauty." Parker says, "Pearls before swine." and passes imperiously through the door. History seems to have shown that Booth was the more successful professional, but that Parker was the sharper wit.

yes, well, i could fill a whole blog with Dorothy's quips... caught in a bathroom stall w/o toilet paper--"anyone have change for a five?", etc., i have a couple of Dorothy Parker Readers, compilations, some of the poetry, etc., but the one's we've always heard were dorothy's are not in them... so i wonder how many of dot's are apocryphal... as this Asquith could certainly be (it seems like a joke just waiting to be written). Twain as well gets many attributions. I still can't confirm who wrote this: higgamous hoggamous; women's monogamous; hoggamous higgamous; men are polygamous, but it's often attributed to Dot, and has even been attributed to William James under the influence of nitrous oxide. Bizarre! But yes, I could fill a whole blog with Dot and the round table...

I've just been on Google and it's a joy! And on the subject of Dorothy Parker and failure:

"Men never make passes
At girls who wear glasses."

my FAVORITE of Dorothy's: she sat down next to a sad-faced robert benchley, and asked what was wrong... benchley explained: "my cat is gravely ill and i know i'm going to have to put him down, but i just don't know how i'm going to do it..." dorothy responded: "try curiosity"
