Cambodian Necklace

The Khmer Rouge don't scare me as much as snakes, yikes. This is a few hundred miles from The Killing Fields.

Melinda Herron with Victor Skrebneski

Here's my old friend Victor Skrebneski with Melinda Herron. "The most refined skills of color printing, the intricate techniques of wide-angle photography, provide us pictures of trivia bigger and more real than life. We forget that we see trivia and notice only that the reproduction is so good. Man fulfils his dream and by photographic magic produces a precise image of the Grand Canyon. The result is not that he adores nature or beauty the more. Instead he adores his camera - and himself." - Daniel Boorstin

250 miles north of NYC, north of Toronto, north of almost everything, that's where Vermont is, and it's GORGEOUS in the fall.

Ancient Cities of Jaipur

Here is one of the massive walls of the ancient cities of Jaipur. This was shortly before I moved to Rajasthan, and eventually headed to the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Spencer & Pop Telephone Bar Bangkok

Pop and me at the Telephone Bar, Bangkok. Telephone is where everyone meets before heading to DJ Station. You can eat at telephone, pretty good food too, and tons of expats. Pop owned one of the best restaurants in Bangkok.

Morning Trips To Besakih

Like most Balinese temples, Besakih is not a closed building but a mostly open-air affair. It's made up of courtyards with altars and shrines. The Balinese believe that the gods visit a temple on particular dates, and on those dates the locals hold festivals to honor (or placate) same. Of all the temples on Bali 6 are "supremely holy:" Pura Besakih, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, Pura Gua Lawah, Pura Batukaru, Pura Pusering Jagat, and Pura Uluwatu. Of these, Besakih stands higher than the others (not because it sits some 3000 or so feet above the ocean on the mountain's side, but because it is more sacred to the Balinese). It is said to be the only classless, casteless temple on the island where any Balinese Hindu can come to worship. If you can only go one place in your life, you'd be insane to go anywhere but Bali.

Aspen Colorado

I used to go to Colorado several times a year to experience its superb medical facilities (read: "to go skiing"). Till this day I can't get beyond 'the wedge', or go more than about 1 mph on snow, but there's plenty to do in Aspen without hitting the slopes.

Volcanic Lakes of Keli Mutu

This is in front of the most brilliant of the Keli Mutu lakes. The three lakes are actually pictured on Indonesian money. These should be one of the wonders of the world.

Sumatran Houses

These are classic Sumatran houses. I rented a motorcycle on Sumtra, and rode all the way to the East tip, took a ferry across to Java, and rode all the way across Java, ferried to Bali, crossed Bali, to Lombok, Lombok on to Komodo, Flores, Rinca, all the way to Sulawesi, Irian Jaya, and back to the island of Borneo. SAYA SAYANG INDONESIA!!

Spencer Lord Goes To Pakistan

Overland, of course. Yikes! It's not easy to renew an Indian visa with a Pakistani Visa in your passport, so why not just avoid airports and customs altogether... and ride a camel into Pakistan? Sounds cool to me (deadly, but cool).

Standing Above The Ring Of Fire

Atop Mount Rinjani, with fellow travelers, one German, two Americans, and one Australian. I wish the fog would have cleared so you could see the view (oh wait, that's not fog, those are clouds). On a clear day you can see to Singapore.

Thai Royal Garb

Classic Thai dress, for a bizarre party thrown by Andrew Leaver in Bangkok. Andrew was an English Professor at Oxford University who abandoned Oxford to move to Thailand where he could freely pursue his love affair with heroin. He was also the Prime Minister's English teacher. We used to ride from Pattaya to Bangkok in his helicopter. I miss Andrew Leaver.

Torajan Funeral

Funeral in Toraja. This was taken by my favorite ocean- ographer / olympic ice skating coach, Patricia Narr. We stumbled upon a funeral in Toraja quite unexpectedly, but immediately became guests of honor and were drenched with ox-blood in celebration of the event.
