Bush's "Culture of Life"

June, 2005: Bush cut $71.2 million from the budget of the New Orleans Corps of Engineers.

September, 2005: Bush asks for $52
billion to pay for Hurricane Katrina's damage. Federal budget surplus now negative $330 billion.

Ms. Dowd reflects:
"The administration's foreign policy is entirely constructed around American self-love - the idea that the U.S. is superior, that we are the model everyone looks up to, that everyone in the world wants what we have."

"But when people around the world look at Iraq, they don't see freedom. They see chaos and sectarian hatred. And when they look at New Orleans, they see glaring incompetence and racial injustice, where the rich white people were saved and the poor black people were left to die hideous deaths. They see some conservatives blaming the poor for not saving themselves. So much for W.'s "culture of life."" - M. Dowd, NYT

"The first rule of the social fabric - that in times of crisis you protect the vulnerable - was trampled. Leaving the poor in New Orleans was the moral equivalent of leaving the injured on the battlefield." - David Brooks, NYT

Why does everything have to be racially motivated? The people that chose to stay and ride out the hurricane are idiots, still I dont think they deserved what they got. I think it all boils down to our governor not knowing what she is doing. She had no one telling her what to do. I just cant understand why everything freaking thing that happens has to be racially motivated. Did you ever think maybe they put themselves in the position they were in. Not the white people.

Um some of these people did not CHOSE to stay. They did not have a way out. No car no way to leave. yes there were some that chose not to leave, but there were many many others that just could nto get out.

Everyone else seemed to know that the leeve's would not hold, everyone except the president. How can that be? He manages to have troops in Iraq on the turn of a dime but takes his sweet time to get help out to the gulf. What is wrong with that picture?

This is the sad truth. The pictures are quite disturbing on here but people need to see what Bush has done to us! He fears the murder of an unborn fetus or a brain dead woman but when it comes to a disaster in which many poor and struggling black individuals are in danger of dying. He says the reason to draw back the assistance ships was to protect them from being tipped over due to the hurricane force winds? Well Bushie you need a better excuse than that for the week you let people suffer after the hurricane! When friends of mine in Canada were ready to respond on that MONDAY!!!!

I would really hope the Governor of ANY state would not need to be TOLD what to do, he/she would have enough leadership skills to be able to make some decisions; if not then we have a real problem.

Many people who chose not leave are river people, they don't have cars and they live totally different lifestyles than most people. For them to leave would be like going to a foreign company, and they would avoid it if they could.

Face it, NO's wasn't prepared because money was focused elsewhere, they knew the city could not withstand anything greater than a CAT 3 and the NOAA had been warning for 2 years that storms were getting stronger. Guess where the money was, IRAQ!!

The error is evident, but there is a chain to need to follow if you are going to play the blame game. You can fallow the chain, link by link, straight to The Big Easy.

Nice blog, by the way.
